Electrode foil, a kind of material specially used to make the positive and negative electrodes of aluminum electrolytic capacitors, is the key raw material of aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Electrode foil is also called “Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor CPU”. The electrode foil takes the optical foil as the main material and is formed through a series of processing procedures such as corrosion and formation. Electrode foil and electrolyte together account for 30%-60% of the production cost of aluminum electrolytic capacitors (this value varies with the size of capacitors).

Note: aluminum electrolytic capacitor is made by winding the corroded anodic aluminum foil covered with oxide film, corroded cathodic aluminum foil and electrolytic paper, impregnating the working electrolyte, and then sealing in the aluminum shell.

Type of electrode foil

1. According to the use, the electrode foil can be divided into cathode foil and anode foil.
Cathode foil: the electronic optical foil is directly made into finished products after corrosion. Anode foil: voltage shall be applied at the corrosion stage, and the formation process shall be carried out after corrosion to form anode foil. The process difficulty and added value of anode foil are high.

2. According to the production stage, it can be divided into corrosion foil and formation foil.
Corrosion foil: electronic aluminum foil is used as raw material. After corrosion with concentrated acid and alkali solution, nano holes are formed on the surface of aluminum foil, thereby increasing the surface area of optical foil. Formed foil: the corrosion foil is used as the raw material for anodic oxidation treatment, and an oxide film is generated on the surface of the corrosion foil through different anodic oxidation voltages.

3. According to the working voltage, it can be divided into low voltage electrode foil, medium high voltage electrode foil and ultra-high voltage electrode foil.
Low voltage electrode foil: the working voltage of electrolytic capacitor is 8vf-160vf. Medium and high voltage electrode foil: the working voltage of electrolytic capacitor is 160vf-600vf. Ultra high voltage electrode foil: the working voltage of electrolytic capacitor is 600vf-1000vf.

Electrode foil is specially used for making aluminum electrolytic capacitors. The prosperity of electrode foil industry is closely related to the capacitor market. The complete industrial chain of electrode foil preparation takes high-purity aluminum as the raw material, which is rolled into electronic aluminum foil, and finally made into electrode foil through corrosion and chemical formation process. The electrode foil is specially used to make the cathode and anode of aluminum electrolytic capacitor, and finally used in consumer electronics, communication products, automotive electronics and other terminal electrical equipment.

In terms of demand, traditional consumer electronics and industrial electronics are growing steadily, while the rapid growth of new infrastructure, especially new energy vehicles, 5g base stations and other application fields will lead to an explosion of demand for upstream electrode foil. At the same time, the rapid promotion and growth of sodium ion batteries will provide a new engine for the demand for aluminum foil.

Aluminum and lithium will undergo alloying reaction at low potential, and copper can only be selected as the collector for lithium-ion batteries. However, aluminum and sodium will not undergo alloying reaction at low potential, so sodium ion batteries can choose cheaper aluminum as collector. Both positive and negative current collectors of sodium ion battery are aluminum foil.

After aluminum foil replaces copper foil in sodium ion battery, the material cost for making collector in each kwh battery is about 10%. Sodium ion batteries have good application prospects in the fields of energy storage, electric two wheeled vehicles and A00 class vehicles. In 2025, the domestic battery demand in these three fields will reach 123gwh. At present, due to immature industrial chain and high manufacturing cost, the actual production cost of sodium ion battery is more than 1 yuan /wh. It can be estimated that in 2025, the demand for aluminum foil on sodium ion batteries will be about 12.3 billion yuan.
